Perhaps among the worst kept secrets in the National Football League, the Washington Redskins have officially cut ties with Robert Griffin III. It had been reported back in January the Redskins were expected to cut Griffin unless the team could work out some form of trade that would net some draft picks or even another player at a lower cost to the team. That was not the case, so today the Redskins made the most anticipated cut around the NFL.

For Washington, the franchise moves forward without controversy surrounding its quarterback position. From here forward this offense is now being led by none other than Kirk Cousins, who has provided some stability, if not just more sustained durability. The Redskins placed a franchise tag on Cousins last week after breaking off negotiations, which was another strong indication what was about to happen with RG3 for those who had any doubt he had played his final game in burgundy and gold.

So, what is next for the former Heisman Trophy quarterback who was once considered the future of the NFL and a franchise quarterback for Washington? That is an excellent question.

There are suggestions out there RG3 would like to return to Texas, which leaves the Dallas Cowboys as the frontrunning option. Of course, the Cowboys have Tony Romo, which means Griffin would have to accept a reduced role and work his way back to being a starter in the NFL. Or he could just wait until Romo inevitably breaks down at some point, which could very well be a reality given his track record. Would Dallas actually find room to provide shelter for both RG3 and Johnny Manziel in the same offseason? No other team would have two Heisman Trophy winners playing backup, which would be such a Jerry Jones thing to do. Other options previously discussed for Griffin include San Francisco with Chip Kelly or Kansas City with Andy Reid. when we were last updated though, Houston appeared to be the betting favorite according to Bovada.

The question about RG3 is how much does he truly have in the tank? He has been injured and had been caught in turmoil off the field as well. Could a change of scenery be just what he needs to recapture his football glory? With the amount of talent in him, you simply never know. For now, he seems to be keeping a level head on his shoulders, which is good. RG3 took to Twitter this morning to share some of his reaction to the expected news, and he seems to be staying positive.

The Redskins may have found their replacement for RGIII on the roster, if their Twitter account — which features Kirk Cousins in the banner image) today is any indication…
