When you are a former coach, it makes being a Monday morning quarterback much, much easier. You have been in those shoes before and you know what plays are going to be called and what patterns are going to be followed. It is said all from afar and none of it comes off as relevant since it wasn’t shared during their time as leader of the team. Do those coaches have a right to make a statement about their former team?

Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is only a year removed from coaching in the NFL, so his perspective is both fresh and insightful. His old school ways may have been his downfall but he still knows players inside the Giants locker room.

He has an opinion on one of the most polarizing players in the league, Odell Beckham Jr. and isn’t all roses.

Coughlin was a guest on “We Need To Talk“, a CBS Sports Network show, and laid it out to everyone plainly.

“(Beckham) really believes that he is at his best at the top of his passion,” Coughlin told the show’s panel. “He is so talented. I don’t think there’s anything the kid can’t do. He is a good kid. He is a team guy in the team room. It’s just when he gets on the field, there’s only one way he knows how to play.”

Coughlin wasn’t done talking about Beckham, giving out some more insider info.

“I would love to try to help him in this regard because I think so highly of him,” Coughlin continued. “(But) he is a distraction. If you watch a game the camera is on him the whole time.”

Everyone on the show was in agreement about how much of an asset he is when he isn’t being a liability. Beckham is one of the few players in the league that is worth the risk, only making the reward that much sweeter. The Giants may not be at their wits end with him yet, but if a former coach’s insight is any indication, he doesn’t have the longest leash.
