After a tumultuous few months that saw him go from potentially being the 49ers starting quarterback to being demoted to third-string and subsequently traded to the Dallas Cowboys, Trey Lance has revealed his reaction to hearing he was dealt to Dallas.

“Obviously, it was tough, but for me, it was trying to figure out what was next and what’s going to happen in the future,” Lance told Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I really tried to not expect anything one way or another, but I can say that when I heard ‘Cowboys,’ I had a big smile on my face. I was very excited to be here.”

Lance went on to discuss his relationship with new teammate Dak Prescott, saying Prescott “welcomed him with open arms,” and adding, “This morning was the first time I ran into him, but that meant a lot to me. He’s a guy who has obviously played at a very high level for a very long time. Nothing but tons of respect for him, as I think he deserves and gets from across the league. So for me, just trying to learn everything I possibly can from him.”

The former first-round pick has no regrets about how things went in San Francisco, but he is excited to be in Dallas and can’t wait to start learning more from Prescott, saying, “How he treats people. Just the type of person he is. And, obviously, the football stuff kind of speaks for itself. But definitely looking forward to being a sponge, just soaking up everything I can from him.”

Lance is expected to be a backup in Dallas going forward, but with four years still on his contract, who knows what the future could hold for the two-time FCS Champion
