There was a scary scene in the second quarter of Sunday’s Broncos-Chargers game when Chargers running back Melvin Gordon knocked over Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Phillips was standing on the sideline when Gordon was pushed in his direction and careened into him.

The fall looked innocuous enough had it been a player, but when you’re 69 years old like Phillips, there is really no such thing as an innocuous fall. Phillips left the game on a stretcher and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Phillips was moving his hands and feet in the ambulance, and communicating with his wife, according to 9 News.

Luckily, it seems that Phillips has avoided the worst case scenarios. But if it was serious enough to require a hospitalization, he may not be out of the woods yet. In recent years, Phillips has become the architect of the most fearsome defense in the league, turning a talented bunch into an all-time great unit. The team will obviously miss his presence on the sideline if he is forced to miss any time, and we will keep you updated with news relating to his condition as it breaks.
