The professional football franchise in Washington D.C. just settled on a new name a couple of years ago, naming themselves the Washington Commanders following two seasons of playing as simply the Washington Football Team after dropping the controversial Washington Redskins name. But now, it sounds like the team is considering changing the name once again.

Following the finalized sale of the Washington Commanders franchise earlier this month, new co-owner Magic Johnson revealed that the team could consider changing the name of the team once again as part of a full rebrand as the team distances itself from former team owner Dan Snyder and the culture he and his ownership fostered throughout the organization over the years.

During a recent interview wit the Today Show, Magic Johnson said that there would be a discussion about potentially changing the name “eventually,” but made it clear that new ownership currently has “enough work to do that will keep us busy.”

“Everything’s on the table, especially after this year,” Johnson said. “We’ll see where we are with the name, but I can’t say that right now.”

It’s some pretty insane news given how recently the team changed its name to the Commanders, and the NFL world had plenty to say about it.

Washington will be the Commanders for at least one more season. We’ll have to see how long the name lasts after that.
