In the early hours of the Sunday morning here in America, Spain defeated England 1-0 to capture the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup championship.
This was the first time in the history of the World Cup that the U.S. Women’s National Team didn’t make it to the semifinals of the tournament, and there has been a lot of clamoring and criticism directed at them as everyone watched Spain win the title from home.
One person who was watching Spain defeat England was former U.S. President Barack Obama. He shared his congratulations for their team on Sunday morning while also sharing a messaging with the USWNT about the next World Cup.

“Congrats to Spain on their first [FIFA Women’s World Cup] victory!” wrote Obama. “The U.S. will be back next time.”
It’s going to be the start of a new era for U.S. women’s soccer by the time the next World Cup rolls around. They’ll have a new manager as Vlatko Andonovski stepped down last week. They’ll also be without some very familiar faces like Megan Rapinoe and potentially also Alex Morgan. And it’s clear that the rest of the world has caught with the U.S. so the bar has been raised for how well they have to play in order to win fifth World Cup.
