Few leagues in world soccer have a worse reputation for fan violence than that of the Turkish Super Lig, but things were taken up a notch on Sunday after Trabzonspor took a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Fenerbahce.

As the clock struck the 91st minute, an idiot fan came out of the stands and attacked an official tasked with minding the touchline, eventually getting in some good blows before stewards and others came in to save the day.

It ruined what should’ve been a talked about performance from ex-Manchester United players Robin van Persie and Nani.

However, it seems that this type of treatment is just par for the course in Turkey, and especially at Trabzonspor specifically. Earlier this season, the club president locked the game officials in the locker room following a contested decision that went against the home club.

Ibrahim Hacıosmanoğlu, the club president, was so enraged by the fact that his team wasn’t awarded what could’ve been a game-winning penalty he ordered stadium security to not let the officials out of the stadium.

Things got so bad that the Turkish president had to intervene personally and get the officials released the next morning.

As for this match, the 4-0 result was a massive help to Fenerbahce’s title chances as they sit six points off Istanbul rival’s Besiktas with a game in hand. Meanwhile Trabzonspor sits mid-table with little hope for the rest of the season.
