On Sunday, United States Women’s National Team legend Megan Rapinoe played her final match with the USWNT, officially retiring after a friendly against South Africa. And based on the reaction from one of her teammates, it sounds like she will be missed.

This week, USWNT veteran defender and co-captain Becky Sauerbrunn made it clear just how much she will miss Megan Rapinoe as the legendary player officially heads into retirement.

“I think we kind of always thought our careers were probably going to end at the exact same time, like a little pact that when she hung up the boots, I was probably going to hang up the boots, but it just didn’t work out that way,” Sauerbrunn said according to ESPN. “So I’m just sad.

“It feels like a closing of a major chapter, somebody that I’ve known for so long, grew up with both as a human, but also babies of the system too. So, yeah, it’s sad, but I’m also like, ‘What a career she’s had and all the things that she’s done off the field.’ I mean, what a way to do it.”

Sauerbrunn and Rapinoe have been close friends ever since meeting at U16 camp together many years ago. And now, Rapinoe is calling it a career.
