Here’s a great way to make your coach resent you.

Preston North End faced off against an undermanned 10-man Sheffield Wednesday squad on Saturday. In the hard-fought match, Sheffield pulled off a 2-1 victory to move themselves into 6th place in the English Championship, the second division of English soccer. Sheffield was able to get the win by an embarrassing scuffle between two Preston teammates.

Jermaine Beckford and Eoin Doyle were sent off late in the match after the two got in a sparring match with each other. The two were handed straight red cards after getting feisty with one another. Beckford and Doyle pushed each other and exchanged heated words. Beckford elbowed another teammate who was trying to contain him. The referee quickly drew a red card, ejecting both Preston teammates.

While the scuffle didn’t have huge repercussions in the Sheffield matchup, as it happened in the 90th minute and Sheffield was already winning, it will impact Preston’s next game. It will hurt the club that Beckford and Doyle will be unable to participate in the club’s next match. With Preston sitting in the middle of the Championship’s league standings at 7-4-8, losing two key starters for such a stupid reason much be infuriating for the team’s players, coaches and fans.

Fighting with your teammate during an ongoing match is about as dumb as it gets. Hopefully, the reaction and sitting out will drill into Beckford and Doyle’s minds that they’re teammates, not adversaries.
