Brittney Griner said Thursday it’s a “crime” to prevent transgender athletes from competing against women in sports.

Griner faced the media to preview the 2023 WNBA season, and while many of the questions dealt with her detention in a Russian prison among other issues, an ESPN reporter asked about her stance on legislation dealing with transgender athletes.

The WNBA star answered at length.

“That ranks high on the list of things I’ll be fighting for and speaking up against,” Griner said (via Fox News). “Everyone deserves the right to play. Everyone deserves the right to come here, sit in these seats, and feel safe. And not feel like there’s the threat, or they can’t be who they are, or like it’s just all eyes on them.

“I think it’s a crime honestly to separate someone for any reason. So, I definitely will be speaking up against that legislation and those laws that are trying to be passed, for sure.”

Transgender athletes are fueling debates around the world. And the debate is cutting across political lines. For example, tennis legend Martina Navratilova, a longtime advocate for LGBTQIA causes, has come out strongly against the participation of biological males in women’s sports.

Many U.S. states and school districts have proposed or passed legislation to ban transgender women from competing in women’s sports. However, the Biden Administration has proposed a rule that would prohibit such bans. It would be included as a provision of Title IX. President Biden has also threatened to veto proposed federal legislation aimed at banning transgender athletes.
