One of the most illustrious careers in the history of professional wrestling is set to come to an end.

During Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, “The Icon” Sting announced that he will have his final match at the AEW Revolution pay-per-view in 2024. While a date and location for the show have yet to be announced, previous editions of the pay-per-view have taken place in late February or early March.

“My very last match will be Revolution 2024,” Sting announced during a promo.

While Sting had previously announced his retirement upon being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016, he insisted that this time, he was hanging his boots up for good.

“One more key thing that you guys all need to know,” the 64-year-old told the crowd in Rosenberg, Texas. “The only thing for sure about Sting is my retirement, Revolution 2024, is for sure.”

A former bodybuilder, Sting — whose real name is Steve Borden — is best known for his run in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), which lasted from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. Once a blonde surfer-like character with colorful face paint, Sting later reinvented himself as a brooding, silent figure with long dark hair and black and white face paint.

The six-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion provided several memorable moments during the “Monday Night Wars” between WCW and the then-WWF in the late-1990s. He was especially known for his battles with Hollywood Hulk Hogan and the New World Order (nWo) and would frequently attack the group by dropping down from the rafters and using a black baseball bat as a weapon.

Sting also defeated Ric Flair in the final episode of WCW Monday Night Nitro after the company was purchased by WWF (now WWE) in 2001. Following the end of WCW, he had a 12-year run in TNA Wrestling from 2003-2014 and made his first ever appearance in WWE at the Survivor Series pay-per-view in 2014.

Sting would go on to have two matches in WWE, losing to Triple H at WrestleMania 31 and Seth Rollins at Night of Champions in 2015, during the latter of which he suffered a serious neck injury. Despite the injury and his age, he debuted in All Elite Wrestling in December 2020 and has gone on to have several tag team matches in the company, usually alongside Darby Allin.

It has yet to be announced who Sting’s final opponent will be.
