Corey Graves and Carmella

Last October, WWE Superstar Carmella revealed to the world that she was treated for an ectopic pregnancy. This took place one month after suffering an early miscarriage. An ectopic pregnancy is when the egg grows outside of the uterus. That could result in life-threatening complications for the woman.

When Carmella revealed this over Instagram, she wanted people who may be going through something similar to know that they’re not alone and that it was important to discuss this. Four months later, Carmella discussed what she and her husband, Corey Graves, went through on Graves’ After the Bell podcast.

Both Carmella and Graves revealed that as this was going on, they didn’t realize how common and how dangerous an ectopic pregnancy can be. Even their friends and family weren’t fully aware, and while it wasn’t their fault, it’s a reason why Carmella is opening up to the world. So others are more informed and understand the seriousness of this. That way, if this happens to someone else, they may be prepared to handle the situation.

Carmella revealed that after undergoing 12 hours of surgery, she was on bed rest for the next four weeks. In that downtime, even though Graves, her friends, and her family were supportive, Carmella underwent a “deep depression” and felt “isolated” and alone.

After she revealed her story, Carmella said that many women from high school, college, and WWE “came out of the woodwork” to support her and reveal to her that it happened to them or someone they knew.

Even after everything, there was still the issue of getting back to the ring. Carmella talked about that, saying she wasn’t sure if she could physically get to that point. Being on bed rest for over a month, Carmella couldn’t work out or train in the ring. On top of the depression, she was essentially starting from scratch from a physical standpoint. Not to mention, Carmella had doubt about whether or not the fans would still remember her, or want to see her back, or where she fit in a company that radically changed since she left.

Looking back, Carmella seems to be in a better place emotionally, mentally, and physically. She returned at the end of January and earned a spot in the women’s Elimination Chamber match. Carmella was part of the final two where she lost to Asuka.

Miscarriages and pregnancy complications are something that people know is a thing, but isn’t exactly talked about. Even if we may not know someone who went through this, chances are we do and just aren’t aware. It’s important to know that while it’s an unfortunate part of life, it is a part of life, and it’s not anyone’s fault. Carmella’s story is one that is worth listening to, and shows that even though these wrestlers portray good people and bad people on TV, they’re human beings on and off screen.
