Steve Austin’s introduction to mainstream wrestling made him one of the faces of the then WWF company in the 1990s.
His personality was relatable with an IDGAF mentality all backed by some underappreciated wrestling moves.
He recently spoke to Sports Illustrated about the legacy he had throughout his career and the influence he left on the sport.
“It’s hard for me to describe because I was the one doing it, but I would have to say, just from a standpoint of action, the stomps in the corners,” Austin told Fan Nation’s Justin Barrasso. “That’s a physical trait I see a lot of WWE superstars do, but I’m even prouder of the improvisational things I would do in the ring.”
Austin also touched on how unique his presence was.
“Being unafraid to push the envelope and go out on a limb, I’m proudest of that. People can say, ‘Austin did it like this.’ I hope that influences some of today’s WWE superstars. I want them pushing the envelope and exploring the boundaries, seeing what they can get away with.”
And push the envelope he did.
Austin is seen on the cover of WWE 2k24 along with other legends like Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, Brock Lesnar, The Undertaker, The Rock, John Cena, Bret “Hitman” Hart, Triple H and Shawn Michaels — to name a few.
In honor of every @WWE Superstar and Legend to step onto The Grandest Stage of Them All, and every member of the @WWEUniverse who’s cheered them on… @WWEgames is introducing the Forty Years of #WrestleMania Edition of #WWE2K24. Really excited for this one. pic.twitter.com/NOeEa7mhgq

He was promoting the game, while also saying because of it — he’s able to continue entertaining 20-plus years after retiring.
“It’s always interesting to come to a WWE 2K video shoot, and I’m always happy to be part of the games,” he said. “It’s really helped extend my life as an entertainer. In actuality, I retired in 2003, but so many kids know who ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin is because of these games. It’s extended my career.”
