Notre Dame wasn’t about to let a power outage get in the way of a hard-fought victory.

On Tuesday, the top-ranked Fighting Irish women’s basketball team squared off against Louisana-Lafayette. With the teams playing at the Campbell Center, the power cut off in the second quarter. After the outage caused a significant delay, Rice University agreed to host the rest of the contest.

Both teams traveled roughly 30 minutes away after already waiting for a more than two-and-a-half-hour delay. The game was resumed with the score 38-17 in the second quarter, which eventually turned into a 91-51 victory for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw told USA Today finishing the game was the only appropriate action.

“We had three options – play tomorrow, cancel or find a place to play tonight,” McGraw said. “I think both teams wanted to play the game. We got here, we wanted to finish it, and coming back tomorrow morning to finish it didn’t seem as much fun.”

The two teams wanted to play basketball and found a way to facilitate that happening. It’s unfortunate the game couldn’t be finished out at the original location, but if both teams were game to wait through the delay and find a new place to play, it’s a win-win – even if Notre Dame walked away with the W.
