Following a 7-0 road loss to the Vegas Golden Knights in the first game of their second-round series, the San Jose Sharks bounced back with a 4-3 double-overtime win in Las Vegas Saturday night. But that almost didn’t happen, as for a while, it looked like the Golden Knights had an overtime winner from Jonathan Marchessault in the first extra period.
However, that was overturned on video review after a determination that Marchessault interfered with Sharks’ goaltender Martin Jones:
And that paved the way for Logan Couture’s double-overtime power-play winner:
Here’s a look at that replay:
Tomas Hertl’s faceoff win sets this up, getting the puck to Brent Burns at the point. Burns then goes cross-ice to Kevin Labanc, who walks in and delivers a perfect pass through traffic to Couture, who sneaks it by Marc-Andre Fleury on the short side before Fleury can get all the way across the goalmouth. That’s a beautiful goal, and it has the Sharks tied 1-1 in the series, a significant change from how things looked for them after that blowout loss in Game 1, and a big change from the sweep the Golden Knights pulled off in their first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings. However, they came very close to being down 2-0, saved only by replay review.
