The Pittsburgh Penguins, just days away from raising a Stanley Cup banner, announced Sidney Crosby has been diagnosed with a concussion. At this time there is no update on how much time Crosby will miss on the ice, but the news of one of the faces of the National Hockey League becoming the latest victim of a concussion problem is an unfortunate circumstance and reality of the sport today.

Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said the injury occurred during a practice on Friday, and not in a game. Crosby sat out of Pittsburgh’s preseason game on Saturday after reporting he was not feeling well. The hope was Crosby was simply under the weather, which happens to everyone from time to time. However, taking nothing lightly in today’s sports world, the Penguins made sure to check Crosby out more fully to come to this diagnosis instead.

Making this news slightly more serious is the fact this is not the first time Crosby has gone through some form of head trauma. Crosby experienced similar issues in 2011. Those concerns held Crosby back for two full seasons as he was unable to play at his full potential. But when Crosby got back in full swing, the Penguins were one of the best teams in the NHL, as was the case last season. Crosby helped lead the Penguins to a Stanley Cup victory, the second with Crosby as a team captain. Just last week, Crosby and the Penguins visited the White House, as is customary for champions in all sports.

It is unknown if playing in the recent World Cup of Hockey had any impact on Crosby’s health, as the head trauma apparently surfaced in a preseason practice. Crosby was the MVP of the summer hockey tournament as he led Canada to a tournament victory.
