Video: J.J. Abrams reveals ‘Star Wars: Episode 7’ X-Wing fighter

J.J. Abrams likes to be secretive about the details of his movies. But that didn’t go so well when he tried to keep the identity of Captain Kirk’s arch-nemesis Khan hidden from fans before Star Trek Into Darkness was released.

So the director is being a bit more forthcoming about his next project, Star Wars: Episode 7. But just a bit. Maybe he realizes just how voracious the appetite is for anything and everything Star Wars-related. Maybe he realizes that some details aren’t so major that they have to be withheld. Or maybe Abrams just thinks some of this stuff is so cool that he has to share.

Revealing a redesigned X-Wing Fighter probably qualifies. Abrams is still a bit mischievous about it, though, which is amusing. This video is for the “Force for Change” campaign with Unicef, in which contributors could get a chance to be in Star Wars: Episode 7, win a visit to the set or an advance screening of the film. As the camera pulls back, we see something that looks relatively familiar behind Abrams.

The more dedicated Star Wars fans might note that this design resembles a different starship. Slashfilm has a comparison of the old and new X-Wing Fighters. And if you want some information that might be considered a spoiler, Badass Digest has details on the possible story and the role that one of the actors is set to perform.

Star Wars: Episode 7 is set for a Dec. 18, 2015 release
