Dugout Digest – wow, that’s it?

Last night was the final night of May…and there were three games on the MLB schedule. Really? Three games? I understand the logic of doing it, as all teams need a day off, and with the weather getting warmer across the country, one nearly full-blown day off across the league seems like a good thing. The Brewers got completely screwed though, finishing up a series in LA last night and then having to fly to Pittsburgh immediately after the game. I read somewhere that they'd be landing in Pittsburgh around 7 AM local time, which is just awful stuff. Anyway…this is going to be a skimpy edition of the DD today, so let's get it on.

Game of the Night: Tigers 7, Red Sox 3. Detroit got a much-needed win in the series finale in Boston, avoiding a four game sweep. The Red Sox got a pair in the second on a solo homer by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and an RBI double from Scott Podsednik. The Tigers chipped away by scoring three in the third. Salty struck again in the third by driving in a run with and RBI single, but the Tigers proceeded to take over, taking the lead on a Miguel Cabrera single in the fifth and adding three in the eighth and ninth on a solo homer by Delmon Young, a Prince Fielder RBI triple, and an RBI single from Young. The Tigers rough road trip will continue with a visit to Yankee Stadium, while the Red Sox head north of the border to Toronto.

Pitching Lines of the Night: No starter did anything noteworthy, but the best start came from Zack Greinke in Los Angeles, who allowed one run in six inning on nine hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts.

Hitting Lines of the Night: Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer powered the Rockies to a huge win over the Astros. Gonzalez went 3/4 with three runs, three RBI, a walk, a double, a homer, and a steal. Cuddyer on the other hand, went 3/4 with two runs, three RBI, and a double. Delmon Young went 3/5 with two RBI and a homer for the Tigers.

Spotlight Series: none. New writeup coming today.

Other Games: The Rockies crushed the Astros 11-5 to finish off a four game sweep, and the Brewers completed a sweep of the Dodgers after a 6-2 win.

Today's Games: Back to a full schedule today. Phew. CC Sabathia goes for the Yankees against Casey Crosby of the Tigers, making his major league debut. The battle for the NL East wages on with the Braves traveling to Washington, and Mike Minor dueling with Stephen Strasburg. Adam Wainwright and Johan Santana is a good matchup in New York. Wei-Yin Chen will go at it with David Price in Tampa Bay for the AL East lead. Felix Hernandez and Jake Peavy will duel in Chicago. Royals ace Felipe Paulino will start at home against the A's. Madison Bumgarner takes on the Cubs in San Francisco. And finally, the red-hot Angels host the Rangers and Colby Lewis.

Enoy your day of baseball, everyone.
