Some issues you should never joke about, and one of those issues is domestic violence. FC Dallas never got that message.
The NFL suspended Ezekiel Elliott on Monday, after a year-long investigation into a domestic violence incident, for six games. And the local MLS club decided to taunt the Cowboys running back on Twitter while throwing in some extra advertising.
FC Dallas’ tweet, which has since been deleted, had an image of their remaining home schedule and read:
“Yo @EzekielElliott, we’ve got six games for ya.”

As Twitter grew outraged, FCD promptly backtracked and apologized for the since-deleted tweet.
We apologize for an inappropriate and insensitive message posted today. It does not reflect our values. We have addressed this internally.

Ironically, the club has been hyping up Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott’s attendance at games recently. The plot thickens further as Claudia Castillo, FC Dallas’ social media manager, is the Cowboys’ former webmaster. (That does not mean she was directly responsible for the tweet.)
This isn’t a case of tweets that are bad in a funny way, a la Nick Young smack-talking the Warriors before joining the franchise or some of Mavericks rookie Dennis Smith Jr.’s sexual tweets from high school surfacing on draft night. Whoever was responsible for this classless tweet has plenty of explaining to do and hopefully whatever FC Dallas did to address the issue was appropriate.
