Gleyber Torres is having a very good second season for the New York Yankees, with a .283/.347/.524 slash line and 26 home runs.
But he’s having a *ridiculous* season when it comes to facing the Baltimore Orioles. Yes, everyone beats up on the Orioles, but nobody is doing it like Torres is.
The second-year infielder homered in game one of a doubleheader vs Baltimore on Monday, and has followed it up with two more dingers in game two.
Here’s his first homer of game two:

And the second homer of game two, with the call from Orioles play-by-play man Gary Thorne:

Torres now has 13 homers against the Orioles this season. THIRTEEN homers vs one team. That achievement is every bit as rare as it sounds. Roger Maris was the last player to hit thirteen homers in a season vs one team, in his 61-homer 1961 season.
Gleyber Torres has 13 home runs against the Orioles this season. The last player with 13 homers against one opponent in a season: Roger Maris (oh look, the Yankees) against the White Sox in 1961, which you might know as the year he hit a lot of homers.

The record for homers vs one opponent in a season is 14 by Lou Gehrig in 19363.
MLB Most HR in Season vs Opponent
14 Lou Gehrig 1936 NYY vs CLE
13 Jimmie Foxx 1932 PHA vs DET
13 Hank Sauer 1954 CHC vs PIT
13 Joe Adcock 1956 MIL vs BKN
13 Roger Maris 1961 NYY vs CHW
13 Gleyber Torres 2019 NYY vs BAL— James Smyth (@JamesSmyth621) August 13, 2019
And this is Torres’ five multi-homer games vs the Orioles are the most multi-homer games by a player vs one team in a season in MLB history.
Gleyber Torres: 5th multi-HR game vs Orioles in 2019, the most by any player vs any team in a season in MLB history.

It’s been tough for Thorne to watch, and YES Network color commentator Paul O’Neill gave him a hard time in the booth.

The Yankees still have two more games vs the Orioles, so Torres still has a chance to top Gehrig’s record.
