Saturday might be the biggest day of the college football season as the biggest game of the year will be played in Athens, Georgia between the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers and the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs.
A loss by either team could all but eliminate them from the College Football Playoff, especially Tennessee, who doesn’t have the built-up cache that the defending champion Bulldogs bring with them.
Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt explained this week what the chances for the Vols are to make the CFP even if they lose this or another game before the SEC Championship.
“LSU at No. 10 is a bit of an outlier. They are the highest-ranked two-loss team in the country. It got me thinking a little bit that this LSU ranking is a huge deal,” said Klatt. “It basically builds a wall behind Tennessee, even if LSU loses this week to Alabama.”
“Because if Tennessee loses to Georgia…well, Georgia is Top 3 and it would be on the road. Tennessee would still have that really good win…great win…best win in the country against Alabama. Now they have what looks to be the second-best win in the country, going on the road and beating LSU soundly.”
Does Tennessee now have a path to the CFP even without winning the SEC East? 🤔@JoelKlatt | @JoelKlattShow pic.twitter.com/qj4GNfl3w9

Some college football experts think there is a possibility of the SEC getting three SEC teams in the College Football Playoff, including the loser of the Georgia/Tennessee matchup, which probably won’t sit well with the college football world. But that’s why the SEC is the SEC.
