The San Francisco 49ers need a new defensive coordinator after letting Steve Wilks go. It appears that a new candidate is emerging from within for the position.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday evening that Daniel Bullocks, the team’s defensive backs coach, completed an interview for the open position.

“49ers defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks just completed his defensive coordinator interview with San Francisco,” Schefter said. Schefter reported the news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

The 49ers have had one of the best defenses in the NFL over the last few seasons. Talent-wise, it’s one of the best rosters in football. Fans were unhappy with how the team played down the stretch, though. Their performance in Super Bowl LVIII left much to be desired, even though Dre Greenlaw’s absence shouldn’t be understated. But it’s true the Niners didn’t play up to their potential. Some considered Wilks’ firing a scapegoat situation. They might have a point, but Niner fans have felt it might be closer to the middle than anything.

We’ll see what comes of this for Bullocks. He’s a former player, starring for the Detroit Lions from 2006 to 2009. He first became a coach at the collegiate level in 2012. He worked with Northern Iowa from 2012 to 2014. Then he spent a year at Eastern Michigan before jumping to the NFL. After one season as assistant DB coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, he was brought on as an assistant coach for the Niners in 2017.

He’s served with the Niners since then. He was an assistant DB coach in 2017 and 2018. Since 2019, he’s been the team’s safeties coach.
