The New York Giants made a decision on star running back Saquon Barkley. Tuesday is the NFL’s “Franchise Tag Day,” in which teams have to decide by the end of the day whether or not they want to use their tag on a player from the team.
The Giants were thought to potentially tag Barkley a year after doing so. But it doesn’t appear they’re going to do that.
On Tuesday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Giants won’t tag Barkley, which would make him a free agent for the first time in his career.”
“Giants are not placing franchise tag on RB Saquon Barkley,” Schefter said. “Barkley is free to leave.”
Schefter posted the news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
Giants are not placing franchise tag on RB Saquon Barkley, per sources. Barkley is free to leave.

Barkley joined the Giants after the team drafted him high in the first round in 2018. It worked, but only to a degree, as Barkley performed very well when he was healthy. There were injuries at times, but Barkley certainly made an impact. However, it didn’t amount to much for the team, as the Giants have been one of the least-hopeful NFL franchises over the past few seasons. Part of it hasn’t been aided by the play of Daniel Jones, who might not be around New York much longer either.
During his career with the Giants, Barkley rushed for 5,231 yards and 35 rushing touchdowns.
