Ben Johnson Lions Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson watches warm up ahead of the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is expected to be a name frequently discussed this offseason for open NFL head coaching jobs. Rumors emerged on Thursday that the Lions offensive coordinator is seeking a big payday if he indeed becomes a candidate somewhere.

CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson indicated that Johnson is seeking a hefty contract as a head coach.

“I’m told personnel around the league are discussing their awareness that some owners have been told Lions OC Ben Johnson’s asking price is at least or around $15M/year for a head coach job,” Anderson said. Josina posted this news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

While there’s probably some shock and awe at that price, it’s fair to remember how negotiations work. You always aim high in negotiations, and your starting price is always higher than what you usually would come to terms with.

Johnson figures to have a lot of suitors. The Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers are probably chief among them. If the Chicago Bears let Matt Eberflus go, then the Bears could easily become a place of interest too. The Las Vegas Raiders also represent an interesting opportunity, and we’re probably bound for one or two more open jobs.

So, we’ll see what happens. But you should expect Ben Johnson to be a hot name this winter.
