The Minnesota Golden Gophers will now be down at least one quarterback going into the off-season. Gophers QB Athan Kaliakmanis announced on Tuesday that he plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Kaliakmanis made the announcement on his personal X account.

“Thank you Minnesota,” Kaliakmanis titled the post with a heart emoji. He then released a statement in a graphic where he thanked the university as well.

“After several days of discussion with my family, I am announcing my intention to enter the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility left,” he said.

Kaliakmanis played a full season under center for the Golden Gophers this season. In twelve games, Kaliakmanis threw for 1,838 yards, 14 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He completed just 53.1 percent of his passes, going 156 for 294. His career completion percentage at Minnesota was 53.3 percent after going 60 for 111 in the 2022 season.

With two years of eligibility left, the now-former Minnesota quarterback hopes to find new ground on which to prove himself. His numbers leave a bit to be desired, but that might spur him to prove that he has more to offer. Teams will always need quarterbacks, so suitors shouldn’t be hard for him to find.

For Minnesota, on the flip side, it will now be about replacing his production, potentially in-house or otherwise.

It’s been a busy beginning to transfer portal season. And since we’ve only just begun, expect things to keep ramping up.
