The Los Angeles Rams made a move at quarterback on Tuesday. They’ve signed former first-round pick Carson Wentz to a short-term deal, perhaps signaling trouble remains in front of Matthew Stafford.

Wentz returns to the NFL and is out of the NFC East. While he played with the Indianapolis Colts for a short time, the former North Dakota State quarterback previously spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders. So, he’ll play for his first NFC team outside the most celebrated division in the conference.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted the news on X, the popular website formerly known as Twitter.

“Carson Wentz is signing with the Los Angeles Rams,” Schefter posted.

Wentz, in his career, is 46-45-1 as a starting quarterback. He’s thrown for 22,129 yards, 151 touchdowns, and 66 interceptions. He’s completed 62.6 percent of his passes with a Y/A of 6.7.

His best season came in 2017. That year, Wentz completed 60.2 percent of his passes, threw for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He finished third NFL MVP voting, despite not finishing the season after he tore his ACL. The Eagles went on to win the Super Bowl that season and without his contributions, they may not have earned the No. 1 seed that season.

But since then, it’s been a bumpy ride. Wentz has played a full season just once since his rookie year. The Eagles made the playoffs in 2019 when he did, but they fell short after he sustained an injury during a playoff matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. Wentz hasn’t really been the same since then and has played for three different teams in the last three seasons: The Eagles, Colts, and Commanders. Now, in 2023, he’s found a new home out in Los Angeles.

While the Rams deal with their starter Stafford’s thumb injury, the team deployed Brett Rypien as the team’s quarterback. Now, Rypien, who coincidentally has roots to Wentz’s most-recent team (his uncle, Mark, led Washington to a Super Bowl XXVI victory in 1991 over the Buffalo Bills) has some competition behind him.
