The Seattle Seahawks decided to ensure Geno Smith would stick around Seattle.

With a kicker in his contract set to take shape later this week, the Seahawks decided to flip the switch on it. Seattle will let Smith cash in on $12.7 million in fully guaranteed money on Friday.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news on Thursday afternoon.

“Seahawks QB Geno Smith, who has $12.7 million in his contract that becomes fully-guaranteed on Friday, was informed today that he will remain on the roster through this week, allowing that money to trigger,” Schefter wrote. He posted the news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Schefter added that the money is rooted in injury guarantees that will be converted into full guarantees. Smith will be able to collect the $12.7 million owed to him and remain as Seattle’s starting quarterback for the immediate future.

Smith’s move to Seattle and subsequent success was a huge storyline during the 2022 NFL season. He led the league in completion percentage and threw 30 touchdowns for the first time in his career. This past year, he fell a bit shy of that, but still played well. He completd 64.7 percent of his passes, threw for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Smith has certainly earned his status as the Seahawks’ starting quarterback. Now he’ll be earning a lot more.
