Georgetown women’s basketball coach Tasha Butts has passed away at age 41, the program solemnly announced on Monday morning. Butts had previously battled breast cancer for the last two years.

The Hoyas welcomed Butts to the program this past offseason. She had spent the first two years of her coaching career with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets women’s basketball coaching staff. She served as an assistant and then was the associate head coach during the 2021-22 season.

Prior to coaching at Georgia Tech, Butts coached at LSU.

Our thoughts are extended to the Butts family and to the Georgetown community. Several extended their condolences to the Butts family and to Georgetown on Monday morning after her passing was announced.

“Best to the Butts family, may her memory be a blessing,” Casual Hoya posted.

“No words. Heartbroken to hear of the passing of Tasha Butts. Sending prayers and strength to her family and the Georgetown WBB community,” the Big East’s Kim Adams said.

Georgia Tech expressed “profound sadness” by announcing Butts’ passing.

Elsewhere, the Tennessee Lady Vols were among those who extended their sympathies. Butts had attended the University of Tennessee during her playing career.

“The Lady Vol Basketball family is devastated by the passing of #LVFL Tasha Butts. We’ll carry her toughness and fight throughout this season and beyond. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones.”

LSU also extended their condolences to their former coach.

Rest in Peace, Tasha Butts.
