New England Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones mysteriously ended up at a police station and a hospital on Sunday morning, and nobody really knew why. The 25-year-old reportedly walked to a police station and asked for medical treatment, and was transported to Norwood Hospital. According to Boston Globe columnist Christopher Casper, Jones was hospitalized after taking synthetic marijuana.

For those who don’t know what synthetic marijuana is, here’s the definition from Drugabuse.gov.

“Synthetic cannabinoids refer to a growing number of man-made mind-altering chemicals that are either sprayed on dried, shredded plant material so they can be smoked (herbal incense) or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices (liquid incense).”

The NFL doesn’t list the drug as a banned substance, but as Deadspin notes the NFL can punish Jones for violating the law.

Synthetic marijuana seems to have found a niche for making football players do bizarre things. Top NFL draft prospect and former Ole Miss defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche fell out of a hotel window in early December, after reportedly using the drug which caused him to get paranoid and walk through a window according to Fox Sports Clay Travis. Somehow Nkemdiche only suffered minor injuries.

So the two cases should be a lesson for NFL players to be more cautious when using synthetic marijuana as clearly it can make you act very strangely, and make you unintentionally harm yourself.
