In an effort to further promote diversity, Major League Baseball has hired former Pittsburgh Pirates director of player personnel Tyrone Brooks to head up a new program designed to increase the number of female and minority candidates available for jobs in baseball ops and on the field. Prior to working for the Pirates, Brooks held positions with the Indians and Braves

The league says in a press release that this program will help, “identify, develop, and grow the pool of qualified minority and female candidates for on-field and baseball operations positions throughout the industry.” There are currently two African-American managers in baseball, Dave Roberts and Dusty Baker, both of whom were hired this offseason, and the only Latino manager in the big leagues is Atlanta’s Fredi Gonzalez. There are also only four minority General Managers: 2 African-Americans (Dave Stewart of Arizona and Michael Hill of Miami), the Dodgers Pakistani GM Farhan Zaidi and the only Latino GM is Al Avila of Detroit.
