After attending a college football game you might feel like you’ve heard the same fight song 500 times, but one Niagara Falls neighborhood has learned what overexposure to a school’s go-to tune really means.

For roughly six months, the University of Iowa’s fight song has played out of the same window almost every day between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m., a 50-second clip looped 500 times.

This totally surreal Niagara Gazette article attempts to get to the bottom of the interminable music but doesn’t make much headway.

The winter weather has not deterred its play. Even through stretches of freezing temperatures, the sounds echo faintly for a city block in any direction.

A local restaurant, Wine on Third, neighbors the vacant building with an address at 500 Third St. The structure is also kitty-corner to the Niagara Gazette offices, 473 Third St.

Its owner, Shawn Weber, said he remains uncertain of why the music keeps playing. His customers, he said, have complained, as have the residential tenants above Wine on Third.

“I’m not sure what the purpose is or what the issue is,” Weber said.

The building could possibly be owned by the world’s biggest Iowa fan, the world’s biggest troll or maybe both. It’s hard (impossible) to imagine a legitimate reason to play the same song 500 straight times. It’s sort of amazing the neighbors haven’t stormed the building and smashed whatever device is playing the song.
