Last month, Mike Brey reportedly was set to retire as Notre Dame men’s basketball coach. Brey had accomplished plenty in South Bend and figured to be at the end of the road. But, not so fast: It turns out he isn’t going anywhere.
Brey reportedly isn’t retiring at all, actually. College basketball insider Jeff Goodman revealed a new, huge update: Brey informed Goodman that he planned to stay unretired.
Goodman tweeted, “Big news out of Notre Dame. Mike Brey tells me that he is not retiring. ‘Definitely not done coasting.’ – Brey. Great to hear from one of the best guys in the business.”

This is obviously a massive update to the story and one that comes with a bit of a surprise. It seemed as though all was foregone here but Brey choosing not to retire at all means he’s here to stay.
And what’s more: He won’t be coaching for the Irish. Goodman tweeted, “For those asking, Brey is done at Notre Dame after the season. But wants to continue coaching.”

So when the 2023-24 college basketball season begins, Mike Brey could well be on a different court than we’ve become accustomed to. The last time he didn’t coach Notre Dame was in the year 2000, right before his stint in South Bend, with the Delaware Blue Hens.
