The Notre Dame men’s basketball program has reportedly made a huge coaching move. According to CBS Sports college basketball insider Matt Norlander, the Fighting Irish have gone to the Big Ten to find Mike Brey’s successor in South Bend.
“BREAKING: Micah Shrewsberry is leaving Penn State after two seasons and finalizing a 7-year deal to be the next coach at Notre Dame, sources told @CBSSports. Shrewsberry has been ND’s top target for the past two weeks—but talks didn’t begin until PSU was knocked out of the NCAAT,” Norlander tweeted.

Norlander reports that Notre Dame will formally introduce Shrewsberry as its next head coach on Friday. The move that will see Shrewsberry return to his home of Indiana was foreshadowed earlier this afternoon when Penn State junior guard Dallion Johnson and junior forward Caleb Dorsey entered the NCAA transfer portal, while Seth Lundy declared for the 2023 NBA Draft.
Shrewsberry led the Nittany Lions to a 37-31 across two seasons. He helped turn the program around significantly in Year 2, coaching Penn State to a 23-14 record, while also reaching the Big Ten conference tournament final and advancing past the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which was the program’s first March Madness bid in 12 years.
The college basketball world reacted to the massive Notre Dame news on social media.
Micah Shrewsberry is an incredible coach; schematically & as a leader. Great hire by Notre Dame & Micah deservingly taking the next step up for sure.
I do question how a school at Penn State's stature cannot fund and build a good program…. but again, good hire https://t.co/LjMzcn7B2l

micah shrewsberry may win a national championship at notre dame because he made it to the second round at a place that actively sabotages its own program https://t.co/sMDys6NvwS

Micah Shrewsberry's deal with Notre Dame is a 7 year contract. Notre Dame understands that basketball is a full "tear it down to the studs" rebuild and are prepared to be patient.
Hard to overstate what a nice get this is for Jack Swarbrick and Notre Dame

An absolute perfect hire by ND 🔥 https://t.co/OBsyR7wYxw

This means for Notre Dame football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball that an African American is the head coach.
That is really cool news at a super special place like Notre Dame. https://t.co/x3UuEmQ8Ni

No one can make the comment anymore about ND not caring about hoops.
It's go time. What an awesome hire. https://t.co/qgZmHFiXcC

Great for Micah heading back to the state of Indiana. No doubt he's going to do really well at Notre Dame. Unfortunate for Penn State and Big Ten as a whole, really left his mark in the short period he was in Happy Valley. https://t.co/cLBZeo55q7
