At the end of last month, Seton Hall’s second-leading scorer announced that he would be entering the transfer portal. Well, nearly three weeks later, Tyrese Samuel has come out the other side of the portal as a member of the Florida Gators men’s basketball program.

Seton Hall Pirates senior Tyrese Samuel, a 6-foot-10, 235-pound center from Montreal, Quebec, took to Twitter late Sunday night, announcing his commitment to the SEC program. He spent the 2022-23 season with the Pirates where he shot 55 percent from the floor and averaged 5.9 rebounds per game.

Samuel appeared in 33 games this past season with the Pirates. He averaged 11.0 points per game in those contests. Samuel also shot 64.6 percent from the free throw line, as well.

He recorded a double-double in each of his final two games with Seton Hall. In a first-round Big East Tournament 66-65 loss to DePaul, Samuel put up 16 points and 12 boards. He then followed that up with a 16 and 12 showing in a 65-64 loss to Colorado in the National Invitation Tournament. Samuel recorded four double-doubles in his final eight games.

Samuel becomes the third player from the transfer portal to commit to the Gators this offseason, joining both Micah Handlogten (Marshall) and EJ Jarvis (Yale). Florida has reached into the portal multiple times and came away with players that are all 6-foot-8 or taller.

After spending four years at Seton Hall, Samuel is moving from the Big East to the SEC.
