Boston College Army Umpire makes tackle Photo Credit: CBS Sports

The craziest tackle of Saturday’s college football slate came from an unlikely source.

An umpire.

The bizarre incident happened in the second quarter of the Boston College-Army game. Eagles quarterback Thomas Castellanos ran a keeper up the middle and had plenty of daylight ahead of him.

Until he ran into umpire Mark Wilson. The collision knocked Castellanos down after an eight-yard gain.

To be fair, Wilson saw Castellanos approaching and took a couple of steps out of the way … just as the BC quarterback cut in that direction.

As you can imagine, CBS announcers Chris Lewis and Ross Tucker got a huge laugh out of the play.

“Ooooh!” Tucker said at the moment of collision.

“The umpire is Mark Wilson, and he gets credit for the tackle — put him in the boxscore,” Lewis said.

“And that’s one of the reasons why in the NFL the umpire is behind the offense,” Tucker said. “Watch this nice move by Castellanos —”

Lewis suddenly broke out laughing, interrupting his broadcast partner.

“You know the poor umpire was trying to get out of the way,” Tucker continued, “but Castellanos is looking for guys in black jerseys. He’s not looking for guys in black-and-white stripes.”

Fans had just as much fun reacting to the umpire’s inadvertent tackle.
