After suffering a knee injury in Utah’s Rose Bowl loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions last season, Utah star quarterback Cam Rising has not yet seen the field this season. While there was hope and expectation that the quarterback would be able to return to the team at some point this year, especially after he was cleared to practice with the team, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.
Following Saturday’s win over the USC Trojans, Utah Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham announced that Cam Rising will not return to the lineup this year as he continues to rehab his knee injury.
Rising revealed this offseason that it was it was a particularly major knee injury as he suffered a torn meniscus, MPFL and MCL along with a torn ACL. While Rising obviously wants to get back on the field, he knows he also needs to take care of his body.
“I’m trying to make sure I can be out there because nobody wants to be out there on the field grinding with those guys more than me,” Rising said. “But at the end of the day, it’s my body. My body has to recover.”
It’s a pretty sad announcement, and the college football world had a lot to say about it on social media.
I can’t help but wonder… what would Utah’s record & rank be if they had Cam Rising? pic.twitter.com/EWG7JJ7979

Medical Redshirt for the most gritty, tough, hard-nosed, lunch pail, blue collar, first in last out, deceptively athletic, first-team all daughter-dater QB of all time

Seemed like this was the most likely option the last few weeks.
Get a medical redshirt, come back for a 7th season where Utah is probably the favorite to win the Big 12 and make the 12-team CFP. https://t.co/5Ybuut1QiE

It’s unclear whether or not Rising will return to the field next year, which would mark his seventh season of college football.
