You wouldn’t have to do an extensive Google search to find out how Clemson Tigers coach Dabo Swinney feels about the NCAA’s transfer portal. He is okay with adding from the portal but has been very selective in using it, which explains why Clemson holds an 8-4 record and has fallen behind some of the other Blue Bloods in the Power Five. They’re still recruiting at the same level — at least from a high school standpoint — but in terms of adding transfers, well the results speak for themselves.

The only players that Clemson has added from the portal are Hunter Johnson, who played at Clemson before transferring to Northwestern, and Paul Tyson, the great-grandson of legendary Alabama head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Both are veteran quarterbacks who added no real on-field impact but provided depth and experience in the team’s quarterback room.

In addition to both Johnson and Tyson, Clemson has only made public overtures to two prospects, both formerly from the University of Virginia: offensive lineman Olusegun Oluwatiman and defensive back Fentrell Cypress II. They ended up choosing Michigan and Florida State over Clemson, respectively.

But now, Clemson has made another public overture. On Wednesday, the Tigers formally presented an offer to former Shorter (Ga.) University offensive lineman Alan Herron, who made the announcement on X. The former Division II offensive lineman has picked up offers from a number of Power Five programs that include, but are not limited to Maryland, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Penn State, Boston College, Texas and Kansas.

247Sports considers Herron to be the No. 4 offensive tackle currently in the NCAA’s Transfer Portal, in addition to being the No. 26 overall prospect in the portal.

It remains to be seen if Clemson can land Herron, but it’s clear that the Tigers are in search of another starting-caliber offensive lineman.
