After nine weeks, the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2022 season was released and there were some surprises in store.
The first real surprise was that the Michigan Wolverines were placed fifth. Granted, with six 8-0 teams, someone had to be the odd-team out. It’s just that many feel that Michigan should be fourth instead of the Clemson Tigers. Could be worse for Michigan, TCU is 8-0 and they’re seventh.

Another surprise was that the Tennessee Volunteers are in the No. 1 spot, with the Ohio State Buckeyes second and Georgia Bulldogs third. No one would have predicted Tennessee to be in this spot back in the beginning of the season but they certainly played their butts off and earned their way to the top spot. Rounding out the top six was the 7-1 Alabama Crimson Tide.
College Football Playoff Rankings Top 4:
1. Tennessee
2. Ohio State
3. Georgia
4. Clemson pic.twitter.com/1luXlvJ9w3— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) November 1, 2022
Obviously this ranking will change and it’s bound to change next week. Tennessee plays Georgia this Saturday and Alabama plays No. 10 LSU. A loss by either Tennessee or Georgia most likely won’t knock them out of contention but they’ll certainly drop a position or two.
Many revealed their thoughts about the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season.
I have zero faith in the College Football Playoff committee if they legit think Clemson is better than Michigan. It’s so bad, it’s laughable.

TCU and Clemson have identical records.
TCU's strength of record (3) is above Clemson (4).
TCU has more ranked wins (4) than Clemson (3).
The fact Clemson is No. 4 while TCU is down at No. 7 is laughable. #CFBPlayoff

No team ranked third in the initial College Football Playoff rankings has ever made the #CFBPlayoff…

Clemson was down 35-28 to Wake Forest in the 4th Quarter.
Clemson was down 21-10 to Syracuse in the 4th Quarter.
Clemson is ranked 4th with no mention of this. TCU is ranked 7th and solely because of this. #CFBPlayoff

My #CFBPlayoff Takeaways:
-TCU should be ranked higher than 7, especially with K-State getting a favorable ranking
-LSU at 10 makes no sense
-If this were about entertainment, why not rank Tennessee 1 and Georgia 2?
-Really big for Pac-12 that Oregon State is ranked at 23— Mike Mayer (@offthemike28) November 1, 2022
