Deion Sanders Colorado head coach Deion Sanders walks the field during warm ups as the Oregon Ducks host Colorado in the Pac-12 opener Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

Former NFL Hall of Fame cornerback and current Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has as much fame and notoriety as any coach at any level of football. But that seemingly doesn’t mean that he ever wants to coach at the highest level of the sport.

Sanders appeared on the Nightcap Show with Chad Ochocinco and Shannon Sharpe, where he was asked about his interest in potentially taking the vacant Los Angeles Chargers head coaching gig.

This is where Sanders revealed that he has “no interest” in coaching in the NFL, regardless of the landing spot or how much he is offered by any NFL team.

“I don’t wanna do pros, I love college,” said Sanders when asked about both the Chargers head coaching and general manager vacancy. “I would never do pros. Let me address this one thing. I’m straight. Colorado provided everything I need. Man, I’m having the time of my life. I love Boulder, Colorado. I love the kids that I get to coach. I love the recruiting process, I love all of it. I would have a hard time in the locker room with a guy that’s making a multitude of millions and he don’t want to play.”

It’s a fair argument from Sanders. Colorado paid him quite well to be the coach of the future at their program. Any NFL job comes with far less security than he will likely have at Colorado.

Sanders will need his Colorado team to perform much better on the field than they did this past season. But that will likely come as Sanders starts to bring in his own players through the recruiting process and the transfer portal.

On paper, Sanders has done a great job of doing so thus far. According to 247 Sports, Colorado has the 21st-best incoming 2024 class when you combine both their recruiting class and the transfer portal.
