Texas A&M Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher raised some eyebrows after an offhand remark he made Wednesday at a fan event.

The veteran coach attended a fundraiser ($75 per person) and fan festival Wednesday at the Dallas A&M Club. The event featured an all-you-can-eat buffet, live auction and open bar.

It also included a Q&A session with the 57-year-old head coach. That’s where things got a little tricky.

Someone asked Fisher if he liked to hunt quail.

“I love to quail hunt,” Fisher responded (via Carter Karels of GigEm247). “I like to hunt period. I just like to shoot things I guess. I’m glad I don’t have a gun at practice sometimes.”

It was an off-hand remark, meant to be funny. Fisher is certainly no more serious about discharging a gun at practice than a frustrated and harried mother who jokes she wants to drop her kids off at an orphanage.

But this is the United States in 2023, where mass shootings are frequently in the news and gun control is a controversial issue. Several recent mass shootings have happened in Texas. And just last year, Texas A&M team captain Ainias Smith was arrested on a gun charge.

It’s just not an issue to joke around about in this era. Not surprisingly, Fisher began trending on Twitter Wednesday following the remark.

College football fans quickly weighed in on the issue.
