NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders became a household name by doing things his own way—on and off the field.
That modus operandi has followed him to the University of Colorado where he’s set to begin his first season as head football coach.
Sanders didn’t hide his intentions when he arrived. He told his new team that he would be bringing “Gucci” luggage with him from Jacksonville State, and if they didn’t want to compete, they should hit the portal.
Over 40 players took up Sanders on that offer. Sanders even got into a sparring match with Pittsburgh Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi, who claimed Sanders’ way of doing things reflected bad on their profession.
But with the Buffaloes opening their season Saturday against the TCU Horned Frogs, Sanders is still defending his methods as necessary to bring the change that he got hired to enact.
“It’s really not unconventional. We just did it at an alarming rate,” Sanders told Troy Aikman on a College GameDay interview about his roster overhaul. “Our roster was horrible. I only brought like 20 kids in and had the real discussion with them that it was not going to happen anymore. The rest of them quit. They quit.”
Given Sanders’ audacious styles, the Buffaloes will certainly be one of the most intriguing storylines of the 2023 college football season.
