Transfer season remains in full force in college football.

Tuesday it was Stanford Cardinal running back E.J. Smith’s turn to announce his intention to move on from the program and enter the transfer portal.

Smith, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, was a top-150 recruit in the 2020 recruiting class and spent the past four seasons at Stanford.

Smith was a highly-touted recruit coming out of Dallas’ Jesuit College Prep. He chose Stanford over programs like Georgia, Texas A&M and Florida — his father’s alma mater.

As a recruit, Smith, who hails from Dallas, ranked as a four-star and chose Stanford over Georgia, Texas A&M, and his dad’s alma mater Florida. It’s unclear if he’s looking to return home to Texas, but Smith could have a market for any Power Five programs looking for a plug-and-play running back.

Smith’s Stanford career was marred with injuries. He played in a total of 24 games across four seasons, with half of those coming in 2023. In his final season at Stanford, Smith totaled 216 rushing yards on 53 attempts with one rushing touchdown. He finishes his career there with 555 rushing yards and five touchdowns, in addition to 59 receptions for 242 yards.
