The Alabama Crimson Tide have added a former head coach of two NFL teams to their college football staff.

Ken Whisenhunt is joining Nick Saban‘s staff in an off-field role, as first reported by Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports. He’s listed as the “special assistant to the head coach” on Alabama’s staff directory.

Whisenhunt, 60, was head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2007-12 and head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2014-15. He went 48-71 in the regular season (45-51 with the Cardinals, winning two NFC West titles) and 4-2 in the postseason (including an NFC Championship with Arizona) as an NFL head coach.

He’s also been an NFL offensive coordinator: with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2004-06 (including the Super Bowl XL champions), and with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers in 2013 and 2016-19.

From 2021-22, Whisenhunt was an offensive analyst in the Big Ten for Penn State.

Whisenhunt is also the father-in-law of Alabama coaching analyst Zach Mettenberger.

It’s one of several moves Saban and the Crimson Tide have made to the coaching staff this offseason. On Feb. 3, Alabama stunned the college football world by hiring Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to the same position.

After dominating college football and the SEC for many years, Alabama is now trying to catch up to back-to-back national champion Georgia.
