The Ole Miss Rebels were able to pull off a big victory over the LSU Tigers this week, but it sure wasn’t thanks to the team’s defense.

During the 55-49 win over LSU, the Ole Miss defense surrendered 637 total yards and seven touchdowns, resembling the way the team played on the defensive side of the ball during the 2020 season. And head coach Lane Kiffin doesn’t want to see his defense revert to that.

“This was like our COVID identity, we couldn’t stop anybody,” Kiffin said after the game, according to On3. “I didn’t want that part. I wanted the part of balance on offense. 80 plays with 700 yards. High-play count with 700 yards, no turnovers and no sacks — that’s as good as you can perform, really.

“So yes, I like that and I don’t want to get back into the defense we’ve seen before. We have to get that corrected because here comes a good quarterback coming in this week.”

The good news is that the offense has been able to carry the team so far this season, but we’ll have to see whether or not Ole Miss can bounce back from this defensive performance next week when they take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in a game at home.
