December is a difficult time for college football coaches as they have to navigate players leaving for the transfer portal, recruiting players in the transfer portal, and signing a high school recruiting class during the early signing period, all while preparing their team for an upcoming bowl game. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is feeling that challenge.

During a recent press conference, Lane Kiffin opened up about just how difficult it is to manage a roster at this time of the year.

“I think, like Coach (James Franklin) mentioned, it’s a big challenge trying to manage all of that at the same time,” Kiffin said according to On3. “There has always been recruiting in bowl games. But, now, the portal doesn’t just mean the guys you see going in the portal. It means your own guys and managing that.

“You’re basically managing your current roster and you’re trying to manage your projected roster for next year at the same time.”

It’s certainly a tough spot for coaches, but Kiffin understands that this is just way modern college football calendar works, and you just have to deal with it.

“There are a lot of challenges to it. That’s the world we live in now,” said Kiffin. “That calendar? That’s not very ideal or set up very well but we have to maximize the situation that the calendar puts us in.”
