It’s not often that you see the No. 1 recruit decide to transfer after one season. But we are in a different world. Former top 2023 recruit Malachi Nelson recently decided to leave Southern Cal and enter the NCAA transfer portal.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the latest update on Nelson. The former top recruit will visit the Boise State football program, perhaps a surprising move to many.
Thamel reported the news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
“Quarterback Malachi Nelson, the former No. 1 ESPN overall recruit from 2023, will take an official visit to Boise State in the upcoming days. Nelson transferred out of USC after one season, and Boise will mark his first official visit,” Thamel said.

This is a new phenomenon and will take some getting used to. With that said, it’s pretty wild to read that a former Southern Cal recruit, the top recruit in the country, will take a visit out to Boise State. The Broncos program is one of the best Group of 5 programs in the nation. They’ve built a reputation in the 21st Century as a competent, winning program. But obviously, there’s a vast sea of differences between Boise State and USC.
But, once again: This is a new world. So with that new world come new definitions and adjustments made on the fly.
