The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got some pretty horrible news this week when the team announced that star tight end Mitchell Evans will miss the remainder of the 2023 college football season after suffering an ACL injury. Evans is an important player on that offense, leading the team in both receptions and receiving yards this season, and head coach Marcus Freeman explained how the team is going to try to replace him this season.

The most clear and obvious replacement for Mitchell Evans in the offense is backup tight end Eli Raridon. But as Marcus Freeman explains, the team is going to have to take a sort of by-committee approach to replacing the production Evans provided.

“He’ll be asked to do more, along with Holden Staes and Cooper Flanagan and those guys,” Marcus Freeman said. “You don’t make up for the production that Mitch gave our offense with one guy. I think every person in that tight ends room will be asked to do more, and I’m confident they’ll be able to.”

It’s certainly a big hit to the Notre Dame offense a week before a big game against the Clemson Tigers. We’ll have to see how they respond to the adversity.
