Following the 2021 college football season, Miami (Fla.) quarterback Tyler Van Dyke looked like a future first-round pick.

Two years later, the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year is ending his Hurricanes career not to enter the NFL Draft, but to finish his college career at a different school, with Van Dyke announcing on X (formerly Twitter) that he will be entering the transfer portal.

“I want to thank the University of Miami, my teammates, coaching staff, and everyone associated with the University who have made this chapter in my life truly special and invaluable,” Van Dyke wrote. “I have created lifelong friendships and memories, which I will always cherish. I am deeply appreciative of the opportunities and experiences that have shaped me during my time here.

“I am looking forward to the next chapter and what my future holds.”

Van Dyke’s decision to transfer doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as the fourth-year junior has failed to replicate the success that he found during his breakout 2021 campaign. After throwing for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions en route to being named the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year, he threw for 1,835 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in nine games in 2022 and 2,703 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 10 games in 2023.

Toward the end of the 2023 campaign, the Glastonbury, Connecticut, native was benched by head coach Mario Cristobal in favor of Emory Williams, but returned to the Hurricanes lineup after the freshman signal-caller suffered a shoulder injury against Florida State. Van Dyke’s final performance for Miami came in a 45-20 win over Boston College on Friday, in which he threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns in the 7-5 Hurricanes’ regular-season finale.

247Sports ranks Van Dyke as the No. 3 overall transfer portal quarterback and current No. 5 overall transfer portal player, although more players will enter the portal in the coming weeks.
