New assistant recruiting director Shemy Schembechler reportedly resigned from his position with the Michigan Wolverines football team amid the discovery of insensitive and racist liked tweets on his account.

Angelique Chengelis of The Detroit News wrote, “Shemy Schembechler, who announced earlier this week he was hired as assistant recruiting director, has resigned after a litany of insensitive social media comments and likes.” Included in Chengelis’ tweet was a statement from both athletic director Warde Manuel and head coach Jim Harbaugh.

“Effective this afternoon, Shemy Schembechler has resigned his position with Michigan Football. We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain for individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to a place where our coaches, staff, and student-athletes feel welcome and where we fully support the University’s and Athletic Department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

The remarks were unearthed earlier in the week. An account known as “@AceAnbender” uncovered them on Friday. The liked tweets mocked Joe Biden voters, trashed “BLM rioters,” and talked about Jim Crow and slavery in shocking and disgusting ways.

As CB Wolverines pointed out, “Shemy has to be fired. Even if you put aside his ‘political beliefs’ (that slavery and Jim Crow were good for black people), those opinions clearly would turn any black high school recruit off of Michigan. That’s not the kind of person you want in charge of recruiting.”

The Twitter account now appears to have been completely scrubbed.

One has to wonder why involving anyone from the Schembechler family happened in the first place. Shemy is Bo Schembechler’s son. Bo famously led the Michigan football team from 1969-1989. He is known for a lot of prominences on the field, but abuse allegations that came out years later, long after his tenure in Ann Arbor, tainted him and the program badly. So in this case? Well, you once again wonder why the association happened in the first place.
