A Michigan judge has ruled on a Wolverines football star in trouble with the law.

The judge ruled that Mazi Smith can travel out of the state of Michigan. Smith, a redshirt junior defensive star for the Wolverines, is facing felony weapon charges which were uncovered earlier Thursday morning.

David Jesse of the Detroit Free Press tweeted, “Judge says Mazi Smith can travel with his team out-of-state, which clears him for Big Ten Championship and possible college football playoffs. Gives Smith a personal recognizance bond.”

This means Smith will be with the team on Saturday in the Big Ten Championship Game. Michigan will play the Big Ten West Division Champion Purdue Boilermakers in the game in Indianapolis on Saturday night.

The legal issues with Smith surround an incident that occurred back on October 7. The two-month gap in charges was due to one key factor. According to the Detroit Free Press, Jesse wrote, “The delay centered on Smith not being arrested at the scene when a gun was discovered during a traffic stop around 9 a.m. Oct. 7. If Ann Arbor Police had immediately arrested Smith, prosecutors would have had to make a decision on charges within 48 hours, Savit said.”

Smith was charged with one felony count of possessing a concealed weapon.
